Job Title: Technical Safety Manager
Reports To: Head of Engineering

The Role
The Technical Safety Manager will lead technical safety activities across projects from concept and FEED through detailed design and commissioning support. The role provides technical leadership to engineers, specialist advice to clients and multidisciplinary teams, and ensures that safety requirements are effectively incorporated into plant design.
Working closely with the Process, Mechanical, Piping, Electrical and Instrumentation disciplines, the Technical Safety Manager will identify hazards, assess risks and develop robust, inherently safer design solutions. Alongside the technical remit, the role carries full line management responsibility for a team of technical safety engineers.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Safety Leadership
- Lead and oversee HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, SIL and HAC assessments and other risk assessment activities
- Develop and review technical safety philosophies, design bases, specifications and engineering deliverables
- Lead or oversee fire and explosion assessments, consequence modelling and hazardous area classification
- Identify safety risks and ensure appropriate mitigation measures are developed and implemented
- Review and approve technical safety calculations, studies, specifications, drawings and reports within delegated authority
Engineering Delivery
- Provide technical safety input to process design, equipment selection, plant layout, relief and flare systems, instrumentation and control, and other engineering activities
- Lead or participate in design reviews, HAZIDs, HAZOPs, SIL assessments, HAC and other project assurance activities
- Support technical assurance, audits and incident investigations where required
- Ensure compliance with applicable legislation, client requirements, company procedures and recognised industry standards
- Capture and apply lessons learned to improve future project delivery
Client & Business Development
- Act as a senior technical interface with clients and other stakeholders
- Represent the company at technical meetings, workshops, HAZOPs and design reviews
- Provide clear, practical advice on complex process safety issues
- Support proposals, tenders, estimates and project execution strategies
- Identify opportunities for improving engineering efficiency, quality and value
Leadership & People Management
- Take responsibility for all day-to-day management activities for the team, ensuring the team are engaged and meeting performance targets, and tackling issues at the earliest opportunity
- Lead the completion of all annual performance management activities for the team, ensuring deadlines are met
- Ensure team members are technically competent to safely undertake their roles and display the required behavioural competencies
- Lead, mentor and develop technical safety engineers
- Take responsibility for the overall health and wellbeing of the team
Zero Harm, Competence & Behaviours
- Lead the team in ensuring awareness of, and compliance with, px Group Zero Harm health, safety and risk management standards, policies and practices
- Review and agree to the Zero Harm Charter
- Consistently demonstrate compliance with all MP1 behaviours in line with the px Behavioural Competency Framework
- Maintain a sufficient level of competence for the role, attending all required training and maintaining professional qualifications as required
- Complete the px Management Development Programme and subsequent refreshers, briefings and updates
The requirements
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Safety Engineering or a related discipline
- Significant experience in Technical Safety / Process Safety Engineering within the chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, energy or process industries
- Proven experience delivering technical safety activities within a design engineering, EPC or consultancy environment
- Strong experience in HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA and risk assessment methodologies
- Knowledge of SIL and functional safety, consequence modelling, hazardous area classification and fire and explosion assessment
- Good understanding of relevant legislation, standards and industry good practice
- Experience of working within multidisciplinary engineering teams
- Proven ability to lead, mentor and develop technical safety engineers
- Strong communication and client-facing skills
- Chartered Engineer, or working towards professional registration, is desirable
