Job Description

Department: Private Client Tax

Location: City, London

Compensation: £67,000 - £72,000 / year

Description

Our Private Client Tax team are looking for a Tax Manager to join their growing department. You will be required to drive the delivery of personal tax advisory work, including writing reports and leading discussions with prospective and existing clients - predominantly across our City and Romford office client base. As such, we are happy for the successful candidate to be based in either office.

You will also be required to oversee the work of more junior staff who are responsible for day-to-day delivery of private client services across a portfolio of around 200 clients.

Central to the team, this position involves direct contact with high net-worth clients and fellow professional advisors, all handled with credibility and professionalism. Strong technical expertise is therefore essential, and just as important is the capacity to explain intricate tax matters clearly to those without a specialist background.

The successful candidate will take ownership of how the team delivers its private client offering, while being proactive in putting forward ideas to improve internal processes and efficiency. Alongside this, there will be responsibility for mentoring colleagues and running technical training sessions from time to time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide support to partners and directors in the effective running of the team and in winning new work.
  • Managing a portfolio, consisting of a mix of clients with multiple sources of earned and investment income, and driving the delivery of technical advisory work on the portfolio.
  • Dealing with one off advisory and compliance assignments.
  • A key point of contact for the client.
  • Dealing with large partnerships and high net worth individuals.
  • Dealing with a wide range of capital gains tax issues.
  • Overseeing the UK tax return filling process for a broad variety of clients.
  • Monitoring team progress against targets.
  • Providing feedback and giving input into staff appraisals, as well as direct responsibility for appraising staff.
  • Monitor progress and encourage the personal development of all team members.
  • Ability to produce work to a high standard.
  • Make suggestions and implement changes in order to improve efficiency within the team.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • ATT and/or CTA qualification (or an equivalent professional qualification) with strong private client tax experience.
  • A strong technical grounding across a broad range of private client tax matters, including personal tax, trusts and inheritance tax planning.
  • Experience delivering personal tax advisory work, report writing and bespoke tax advice to clients.
  • Previous experience managing a portfolio of private clients, including high-net-worth individuals and owner-managed businesses.
  • Confidence dealing directly with clients, professional advisers and HMRC.
  • Experience leading, coaching and reviewing the work of more junior team members.
  • Strong commercial awareness, with the ability to communicate complex tax matters in a clear and practical way.
  • A proactive approach to business development, including identifying opportunities and building client relationships.
  • Experience managing WIP, billing and client deadlines within a professional services environment.
  • Excellent communication, relationship-building and presentation skills.
