Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Developer to provide technical leadership for the delivery of an AI-enabled Defence tasking and workflow platform. The role will help shape a secure application that combines Python/FastAPI services, React and TypeScript user interfaces, Camunda workflow orchestration, modular services, data persistence, and integration with existing Defence tasking processes.

Responsibilities:

• Lead the design and development of scalable microservice-based applications.
• Define technical architecture, engineering standards and delivery guardrails for the development team.
• Guide implementation of workflow orchestration using BPMN, Camunda 8 and Zeebe-style patterns.
• Provide hands-on leadership across frontend, backend, platform and integration workstreams.
• Ensure the solution is secure, maintainable and suitable for deployment within Government environments.
• Support integration with existing Defence systems, intelligence workflows and platform services.
• Champion DevSecOps, CI/CD, automated testing and secure cloud-native engineering practices.
• Conduct code reviews, mentor team members and support technical assurance activity.
• Champion responsible AI-coding (e.g. Claude Code) practices combining speed with security and resilience.
• Support customer demos, technical reviews, sprint planning and architecture discussions.

Essential Skills:

• Significant experience delivering software solutions in MOD, Defence Intelligence, National Security or comparable secure environments.
• Proven experience leading agile software development teams.
• Strong engineering background across Python, FastAPI, REST APIs, React and TypeScript.
• Experience designing and delivering microservice architectures.
• Experience with PostgreSQL, MongoDB and mixed data-store architectures.
• Experience with Kubernetes-based platforms and containerised deployment.
• Knowledge of secure system design, identity/access controls and service-to-service security.
• Experience working directly with Defence stakeholders, architects and delivery teams.
• Experience establishing engineering standards, code quality practices and technical governance.
• Experience with MOD development and deployment environments.

Desirable Skills:

• Camunda 8, Zeebe, BPMN or equivalent workflow orchestration platforms.
• AI-enabled applications, LLM integrations, semantic search or agentic workflow concepts.
• GCP experience.
• Event-driven architectures and asynchronous messaging patterns.
• DevSecOps and platform engineering leadership experience.
