Job Summary

The Radiotherapy Physics Service is responsible for providing clinical,technical and scientific support to the Radiotherapy Department at theRoyal Free London NHS Foundation Trust.

The Service is a multi-disciplinary team consisting of Clinical Scientists,Therapy Radiographers and Clinical Technologist staff.

The Clinical Scientists are responsible for the scientific aspects of thispatient critical service, including patient radiotherapy treatmentplanning and checking, advising clinical staff on the physics of radiotherapy, measuring patient doses, implanting radioactive sources,ensuring that equipment is operating safely and effectively, calibratingtherapeutic equipment, ensuring the safety of patients and staff in ahazardous environment that includes exposure to high levels of ionisingradiation, selecting, procuring and acceptance testing of equipment,introducing new techniques, applied research and development andteaching

Main duties of the job

A 12 month fixed term maternity cover job opportunity have arisen for a band 7 radiotherapy physicist to join the friendly and dynamic radiotherapy physics team at the Royal Free Hospital.

Either HCPC registered Clinical Scientist or eligible for registration within 3 months are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidates should be dedicated, communicative and collaborative persons willing to participate in all aspects of the radiotherapy physics service.

  • Honours first degree (1st or 2nd) in physics or containing a major physics component.
  • Relevant MSc or higher degree or equivalent level of knowledge
  • Successful completion of MSC STP in Radiotherapy Physics, ACS Route 2 ,AHCS STP Equivalence or equivalent.
  • Registered Clinical Scientist with HCPC or eligible for membership within 1 year

  • Specialist theoretical and practical knowledge and experience of radiation dosimetry, patient dosimetry, treatment unit technology, treatment planning systems, quality assurance, dosimetry equipment and computer systems in radiotherapy
  • Knowledge of clinical procedures and practices in radiotherapy.
  • Broad understanding of patient and staff risks arising from equipment failure and staff error.
  • Understanding of patient and staff risks arising from treatment planning computer system errors, equipment failure, treatment errors and incorrect dosimetry.
  • Understanding of hazards posed by, and precautions needed with: ionising radiation, non-ionising radiation and electrical hazards
