Requirements
Requires at least five years of professional experience and a bachelor's or master's degree in mechanical, aerospace, or a related field. Candidates should have integrated system design and CAD experience, hands-on fabrication and build experience, strong thermofluids knowledge, modelling skills, and experience designing experiments and analysing data; electrolysis experience is preferred.
Job Description
About us
Rivan Industries is a synthetic fuel company decarbonising heavy industry. We’re making synthetic fuel cheaper than fossil fuels, sustaining life on earth by keeping the CO2 locked underground.
Engineering at Rivan is about taking technologies that are conventionally treated as low volume, bespoke, and expensive, and rethinking them completely to be mass manufactured, standardised, and ultra low cost. Every design aspect must be re-reasoned from first principles, every part’s existence questioned, and every manufacturing step scrutinised.
We’re looking for a talented Senior Mechanical Engineer to own one of our electrolyser sub-systems to drive that forward, tasked with uncovering new ways of thinking about our system integration, performance, longevity, and manufacturability. If you thrive on a lot of responsibility and tight deadlines, come and build!
The role
Own the design and manufacture of an entire Rivan sub-system, from physics and chemistry, to rolling out of the factory door.
Own mechanical design of an electrolyser sub-system, from early stage physics and chemistry, through detailed design, build and commissioning. We need you to:
- Own the concept generation, system architecture, and technical requirements capture
- Design and iterate electrolyser stack structures and sub-system balance of plant.
- Design test-rigs to validate underlying hypotheses quickly and cheaply
- Solve complex fluid and thermal problems, including two-phase gas-liquid flow
- Own and iterate detailed design drawings with our fabrication workshop
- Work closely with process, electrical and controls engineers to integrate the complete system
- Liaise with external vendors to support our development and production
Core skills
- 5+ years professional experience
- Bachelor’s or Masters in mechanical/aero or related field
- System design experience including CAD (SolidWorks), design for manufacture/assembly, part specification and procurement of complex, integrated systems involving moving fluids
- Hands on workshop fabrication and build experience
- Fundamental thermofluids understanding, including pressure loss, heat and mass transfer, and two-phase flow
- Simulation/analytical modelling competency (e.g. python, FEA, CFD)
- Test setup design, running of experiments, and data analysis
Preferable skills
- Alkaline water electrolysis or other electrochemical processes
Specifics
- £70-90k Salary depending on experience
- Significant share options as part of the early team
- In-person work at our HQ in Bermondsey, South-East London
- Extensive relocation support, including £6000 per year extra to live close to our HQ
- Private health insurance
- Visa sponsorship available
- Unlimited time-off
We encourage exceptional applicants from all backgrounds to apply for this role, even if they do not meet all the requirements listed.
