Job Description

We are seeking to appoint a permanent post as Senior Lecturer in Structural Engineering, to contribute and support the development of Teaching & Learning, Research, and Knowledge Exchange within the School of Engineering at UWE Bristol.

This role is offered as a full-time appointment (100%) and presents a fantastic opportunity for a candidate with a background in structural engineering and associated areas. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and delivering engaging, high-quality teaching in structural engineering across undergraduate, and postgraduate levels, including supervision of UG and PG projects and group projects within the School of Engineering. Teaching responsibilities will include structural analysis, structural design, structural engineering applications of relevant standards and codes, as well as Finite Element Modelling and Analysis, and we are particularly interested in candidates with knowledge of Structural Health Monitoring and Digital Twins who can bring these into the curriculum. The role also involves contributing to programmes across the School, including Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, Automotive, Robotics, and Mechatronics Engineering, with potential contributions to Continued Professional Development (CPD) courses.

We particularly value candidates who combine strong teaching skills with practical industry experience in structural engineering and who can draw on that experience to prepare our students for professional practice. There will be opportunities to work with industry partners on knowledge exchange projects and to develop a research profile in areas such as Structural Health Monitoring, Computational Modelling and Simulation, Smart Structures and Sustainable Infrastructure, contributing to the Research Excellence Framework (REF).

About You

We require candidates who have a broad set of skills and can teach effectively across structural engineering themes, from introductory structural analysis through to more advanced topics. Experience with Finite Element Modelling and commercially available analysis tools is essential. Familiarity with Structural Health Monitoring and Digital Twins is desirable. We are looking for individuals who can deliver technically rigorous and engaging teaching, and who bring practical insight from professional experience in the construction and infrastructure sector.

Candidates should either be Chartered Structural Engineers with significant professional experience in structural analysis, design, assessment, and engineering practice, or hold a PhD in Structural Engineering together with substantial experience of teaching in higher education, supported by evidence of teaching effectiveness and educational contribution.

A teaching qualification and experience of teaching in Higher Education is highly desirable. we also value evidence of effective training delivery, mentoring, or knowledge transfer within industry settings. Experience of working in or collaborating with relevant industry is essential.

An interest in developing a research profile aligned to the University's Transforming Futures Research Strategy 2020–2030 is expected, with potential areas including Structural Health Monitoring, Computational Modelling and Simulation, Smart Structures, Digital Twins, and Sustainable Infrastructure. This is a permanent post and is full-time working on a 100% contract.

This post is available on a job share basis for applicants wishing to work part time.
