Job Description
The Safety Inspection Officer helps make sure St Mary’s University remains a safe and compliant place to work, study, and visit. Working 3 days a week, you will carry out planned safety inspections, identify issues that need attention, and help ensure buildings and facilities meet legal and University safety standards. A key part of the role will be carrying out routine fire door inspections and checks on other fire safety equipment across campus.

Job Description
The Safety Inspection Officer helps make sure St Mary’s University remains a safe and compliant place to work, study, and visit. Working 3 days a week, you will carry out planned safety inspections, identify issues that need attention, and help ensure buildings and facilities meet legal and University safety standards. A key part of the role will be carrying out routine fire door inspections and checks on other fire safety equipment across campus.
Safety Inspections
- Carry out regular safety inspections across teaching areas, halls of residence, sports facilities, and communal spaces.
- Identify hazards, defects, or maintenance issues and report them for action.
- Record inspection findings using a handheld device or digital system.
- Complete routine checks on fire extinguishers, evacuation chairs, refuge communication points, and other safety equipment.
- Keep inspection records accurate and up to date.
- Review findings and recommend corrective actions.
- Follow up on outstanding issues to help ensure they are resolved.
- Work closely with Estates & Facilities colleagues, contractors, and the Health & Safety Officer.
- Report directly to the Maintenance Manager.
- Support fire drills, safety training sessions, and awareness campaigns across campus.
- Assist with other reasonable duties as required by the University.
- Has experience carrying out health and safety inspections or similar checks.
- May have knowledge of UK fire safety legislation and good practice.
- Has good record-keeping and reporting skills.
- Holds a fire door inspection qualification, or is willing to complete accredited training during induction.
- Ideally has experience in higher education, facilities management, or a similar environment.
- Communicates confidently with a wide range of people.
- Has a keen eye for detail and takes pride in producing accurate work.
- Can organise their workload and work independently.
- Works well as part of a team and builds positive working relationships.
- Is self-motivated and able to work towards agreed targets.
