Job Description

This role will be based on the university campus with scope for it to be undertaken in a hybrid manner. We are also open to discussing flexible working arrangements.

We are seeking a Research Fellow to contribute to an exciting project focused on understanding the mechanisms driving extreme rainfall from monsoon depressions during the Indian Summer Monsoon. In this role, you will conduct cutting-edge research into how airmass interactions across synoptic and mesoscale environments influence precipitation associated with monsoon low-pressure systems. You will also investigate the role of vorticity aggregation in the initiation and intensification of monsoon depressions, advancing knowledge of their development and structure. Working closely with colleagues at the Universities of Leeds and Reading, you will integrate theoretical understanding, observational data, and modelling approaches to improve representation of these processes, ultimately contributing to improved prediction of extreme monsoon rainfall.
You will be working on the Weather and Climate Science for Partnership (WCSSP) DRENCH (DepRession-driven Extreme precipitation: understanding processes and cHecking predictability) project, and will have the opportunity to collaborate with scientists at the UK Met Office, the University of Reading, and organisations in India.

Main Duties And Responsibilities
- Conduct research activities as outlined in the project proposal, including:
- Use data from reanalyses and high resolution simulations to explore how airmass interactions at different scales control precipitation during monsoon low-pressure systems;
- Investigate the role of vorticity aggregation in the development of monsoon depressions.
- Support the preparation of milestone and deliverable reports, publications, and presentations.
- Engage with project stakeholders and contribute to knowledge exchange.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to collaborative research efforts.
- Prepare papers for publication in leading international journals and disseminating research results through other recognised forms of output.
- Generate and pursue independent and original research ideas in the appropriate subject area.
- Develop research objectives and proposals and contribute to setting the direction of the research project and team, including preparing proposals for funding in collaboration with colleagues.
- Evaluate methods and techniques used and results obtained by other researchers and to relate such evaluations appropriately to your own work.
- Work both independently and also as part of a larger team of researchers, engaging in knowledge-transfer activities where appropriate and feasible.
- Maintain your own continuing professional development and act as a mentor to less experienced colleagues as appropriate.
- Contribute to the training of both undergraduate and postgraduate students, including assisting with the supervision of projects in areas relevant to the project.
