The role
The School of Architecture and Planning at London South Bank University is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and talented Lecturer (Teaching & Scholarship) in Urban Design to join our vibrant academic community.
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to teaching and curriculum development across both Architecture and Planning, helping to shape the next generation of professionals responsible for creating sustainable, inclusive and resilient places. The successful candidate will bring expertise in urban design and place-making and contribute to the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching across a range of design-led and planning-focused modules.
Urban Design occupies a unique position within the School, connecting the creative, technical and social dimensions of the built environment. Working across disciplines, you will support students in developing the knowledge and skills required to respond to some of the most significant challenges facing our towns and cities, including climate resilience, housing delivery, urban regeneration, healthy place-making, sustainable mobility and design quality.
You will contribute to a dynamic and collaborative learning environment, delivering innovative teaching, assessment and student support while helping to enhance and develop the curriculum. The role offers opportunities to engage with industry, local authorities, community organisations and professional bodies, ensuring that teaching remains relevant, practice-informed and responsive to emerging challenges within the built environment sector.
We are particularly interested in candidates who can bring contemporary urban design practice into the classroom and who can support students in developing strong visual communication, analytical and design skills through studio-based, project-based and interdisciplinary learning approaches.

What You Will Bring
The ideal candidate will:
- Hold a good honours degree in Urban Design, Architecture, Town Planning or a closely related discipline.
- Hold a postgraduate qualification in Urban Design, Architecture, Planning or a related field, or demonstrate equivalent professional experience.
- Possess strong subject knowledge in urban design, place-making and the relationship between buildings, spaces, communities and the wider environment.
- Demonstrate experience of teaching, mentoring, training or supporting learning within higher education, further education or professional practice.
- Have the ability to design and deliver engaging, inclusive and practice-informed learning experiences.
- Be committed to delivering an outstanding student experience and supporting student achievement and progression.
- Demonstrate knowledge of contemporary urban challenges including sustainability, climate adaptation, regeneration, housing growth, healthy place-making and inclusive design.
- Have the ability to contribute across both Architecture and Planning curricula and work effectively within an interdisciplinary academic environment.
- Be able to support studio teaching, project-based learning and urban analysis activities.
- Have experience of curriculum development, assessment and module enhancement activities.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role of community engagement, stakeholder participation and collaborative approaches within urban design and place-making.
- Be committed to scholarly, pedagogic and professional development.
