About the Role
The Bank of England is at the heart of the UK's financial system. Within the Technology Directorate, the Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) Platform team is responsible for delivering and supporting the technology that underpins critical payments services.
We are looking for an experienced Lead Platform Engineer (Compute) to join our Infrastructure and Automation capability. This is an opportunity to work on highly secure, business-critical infrastructure that supports services of national importance while helping shape and evolve the future of the Bank's CNI platform.
As a senior member of the team, you will act as a technical leader for the compute platform, providing subject matter expertise across the Windows infrastructure estate and helping shape the strategic direction of the Bank's Critical National Infrastructure platform. You will work closely with engineers across compute, storage, network and security disciplines, driving engineering standards, operational excellence and automation-first approaches whilst mentoring colleagues and supporting the development of platform capabilities.
What You'll Do
- Lead the delivery, support and continual improvement of the Windows Server estate supporting the Bank's CNI platform.
- Provide technical leadership and subject matter expertise across the compute platform, including Microsoft Windows Server, Active Directory and Microsoft Configuration Manager environments.
- Own the technical roadmap, operation and continual improvement of the Becrypt Enterprise Manager platform.
- Take ownership of complex technical issues, working with internal teams, vendors and support partners to identify and implement solutions.
- Work across the wider compute and storage estate, supporting virtualisation platforms, physical server infrastructure, storage services and backup technologies.
- Identify opportunities to improve reliability, consistency and operational efficiency through automation, scripting and repeatable engineering practices.
- Support platform upgrades, lifecycle management, patching and security remediation activities.
- Contribute to technical standards, operational processes and engineering best practices across the wider team.
- Participate in an out-of-hours support rota and provide occasional out-of-hours support for maintenance activities, upgrades and major incidents.

Working Arrangements
The Bank supports flexible and hybrid working.
This role can be based in London or Leeds. You will be expected to attend a Bank office for a minimum of 50% of your working time, measured over the course of a month. Additional flexible arrangements may be considered where business needs allow.
Minimum Skills and Experience
We're looking for someone who can demonstrate:
- Strong recent hands-on experience administering and supporting:
- VMware vSphere 8.x, including ESXi and vCenter
- Microsoft Windows Server (2016 or later)
- Microsoft Active Directory (2016 or later)
- Microsoft Configuration Manager
- Becrypt Enterprise Manager
- Paradox/Becrypt OS
- Altocrypt secure mobility platform
Essential Skills and Experience
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills within complex Critical National Infrastructure environments.
- Experience deploying, managing and supporting Windows virtual server environments.
- Experience working with technology vendors and support partners to diagnose and resolve technical issues.
- Scripting and automation experience, particularly using PowerShell.
- The ability to manage competing priorities and deliver outcomes within challenging operational environments.
