Lead HV Design Engineer
Ringwood, Birmingham or Widnes | 5 days onsite during probation, then 3 days onsite
£80,000 - £100,000 (up to £110,000 for exceptional candidates) | Visa Sponsorship Available
VIQU have partnered with a well-established engineering business that is investing heavily in the growth of its High Voltage division. Following continued success across the utilities sector, they're bringing HV design capability in-house and are looking for a Lead HV Design Engineer to play a pivotal role in shaping the function from day one.
This is a rare opportunity to join as the first HV design hire, taking ownership of technical delivery while helping build and develop the future engineering team. The role is ideal for a technically strong HV Design Engineer who still enjoys producing and reviewing designs, but is looking to progress into leadership as the capability grows.
What you'll be doing
- Lead the delivery of HV substation design projects, with a focus on Primary Design or Protection & Control.
- Produce and review HV electrical designs, calculations, schematics, layouts and technical documentation.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary design activities across civil, electrical and external design partners.
- Ensure designs are safe, compliant, buildable and aligned with DNO and industry standards.
- Act as the technical interface between the business, clients, contractors and design partners.
- Support bids, technical proposals and the ongoing development of internal engineering processes and standards.
- Help establish and grow the company's in-house HV engineering capability.
Technologies & Experience
- HV Substation Design (33kV-132kV)
- Primary Design and/or Protection & Control
- DNO, IDNO, ICP or utility infrastructure experience
- Electrical calculations, schematics and design documentation
- NERS or regulated utility environments (desirable)
- Microsoft Office and engineering/document management tools
Requirements
- Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Chartered Engineer (or equivalent experience) preferred.
- Strong hands-on HV design experience with the ability to actively produce and review designs.
- Experience working on utility or substation projects within DNO, IDNO, ICP, Tier 1 contractor or consultancy environments.
- Excellent stakeholder management skills and the ability to coordinate internal teams and external design partners.
- An interest in developing and leading a growing engineering function over time.
