Job Description

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a LAS Core Trainee (CT1/ST1) in Intensive Care Medicine. The tenure of this post is from 04 November 2026 until 02 February 2027 to cover an interim vacancy. The posts do not attract a National Training Number.

The posts are based within the existing teams with access to departmental teaching and other developmental opportunities. Despite not being recognised as ‘training posts’ they allow doctors to improve the breadth and depth of their experience in Intensive Care Medicine.

Full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise is required, and if the appointee does not hold right of residence in the UK sponsorship will be required.

Further vacancies that arise during the appointment process will be considered from this pool of interviewable candidates

The general adult critical care services are currently provided on two sites, the Northern General Hospital (NGH) and the Royal Hallamshire Hospital (RHH). General adult critical care provided level 2 and 3 care to a wide range of patients supporting both the medical and surgical services. Sheffield Teaching Hospitals is one of three major trauma centres in the Yorkshire and Humberside region.

The critical care units are staffed by trainees from Anaesthesia undergoing ICM training at StR level as required by the Royal College of Anaesthetists, ACCS doctors, IM2 and F2 doctors, Advanced Critical Care Practitioners and in the case of the NGH, an additional group of trainees training for a CCT in ICM.

Whilst in post there will be plenty of opportunity to become involved in teaching, audit and research. The trust run local courses for both the primary and final FRCA and strongly encourage clinical fellows to take part in those as needed.

The post holder will be expected to contribute to daytime activity and to take part in the out of hours on-call rota which is currently a 1 in 8.
