KTP Associate in Building Physics Automation
Requirements
The role requires expertise in building physics, energy systems, and applied AI to facilitate knowledge transfer between the University of Edinburgh and Cosysense. Candidates must be capable of working in a research-intensive environment and translating complex models into practical, real-world deployments.
Job Description
Grade UE07: £41,064 - £48,822 per annum, with an additional market pay supplement bringing the total salary to up to £55,000 per annum
CSE / School of Informatics / Cosysense
Full-time: 35 hours per week
Fixed-term: 24 months
Location: Primarily based at Cosysense
The Opportunity:
Where curiosity becomes impact.
This is a KTP Associate to contribute to the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project that aims to develop next-generation thermal comfort and energy optimisation models for scalable deployment. Funded by InnovateUK, the KTP project is co-led by the Institute for Infrastructure and Environment and Institute for Energy Systems at the University of Edinburgh (UoE), and Cosysense. Cosysense reduces electricity costs and carbon emissions in commercial buildings by delivering optimised comfort through AI-native climate control powered by sensors, digital twins, and autonomous control systems.
The KTP Associate will lead the development and deployment of advanced thermal comfort and grid demand response physics models into Cosysense’s AI control system. You will act as the bridge between academic research and real-world application, translating cutting-edge building physics and human comfort modelling into production-ready algorithms controlling HVAC systems in live buildings. In line with the KTP model, the Associate is embedded at Cosysense day to day, engaging regularly with the University of Edinburgh for knowledge transfer and academic supervision.
This role will be primarily based at Cosysense.
The role combines:
- Research (building physics and energy systems)
- Applied AI / modelling
- Real-world deployment and validation in commercial buildings

Informatics is the study of how natural and artificial systems store, process and communicate information. Research in Informatics promises to take information technology to a new level, and to place information at the heart of 21st century science, technology and society. The School enjoys collaborations across many disciplines in the University, spanning all three College, and also participates as a strategic partner in the Alan Turing Institute and is home to a number of Centres for Doctoral Training.
The School provides a fertile environment for a wide range of studies focused on understanding computation in both artificial and natural systems. It attracts students around the world to study in our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Informatics is one of seven schools in the College of Science and Engineering, at the University of Edinburgh. It is recognised for the employability of its graduates, its contributions to entrepreneurship, and the excellence of its research. Since the first Research Assessment Exercise in 1986, Informatics at Edinburgh has consistently been assessed to have more internationally excellent and world-class research than any other submission in Computer Science and Informatics. The latest REF 2021 results have again confirmed that ours is the largest concentration of internationally excellent research in the UK. This contributes to our ranking of consistently being in the top 30 world-wide.
We aim to ensure that our culture and systems support flexible and family-friendly working and recognise and value diversity across all our staff and students. The School has an active programme offering support and professional development for all staff; providing mentoring, training, and networking opportunities.
