In this role, you will support the SP Transmission Environmental Manager, the Environmental Department and Engineering and Construction teams in delivering, monitoring and continually improving the company's Environmental Management Systems and environmental practices.

 

You will play a key role in obtaining and maintaining ISO 14001 accreditation, while providing specialist Environmental knowledge and advice to both internal and external stakeholders involved in the Engineering and Construction of energy-related projects.

 

 

Responsibilities
In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining and continually improving the internal Environmental Management System to achieve and preserve ISO 14001 accreditation. You will provide support and advice to project teams before and throughout the construction period, helping to ensure compliance with all statutory environmental requirements. In addition, you will sustain and enhance environmental procedures to identify and respond to emerging environmental legislation relevant to construction activities, while providing proactive specialist guidance on environmental controls, constraints and legislation specific to each project.

 

You will play a key role in driving environmental performance by developing and implementing new methods, techniques and practices that support continual improvement. This will include developing Environmental Management Plans for projects, ensuring that survey findings and licence requirements are fully incorporated and effectively managed throughout project delivery.

 

Working closely with a wide range of stakeholders, you will liaise directly with regulators and stakeholder organisations, including but not limited to SNH, RSPB, SEPA and Local Authorities, throughout the lifecycle of projects. You will also manage environmental monitoring and inspection programmes to effectively document operational performance and compliance, preparing timely reports for both internal and external distribution.

 

The role will involve supporting the investigation and reporting of environmental incidents, preparing environmental information to meet annual and ad hoc reporting requirements, and developing and delivering environmental training and awareness initiatives across project teams and stakeholders.

 

You will review contractors’ environmental documentation, with particular emphasis on environmental regulations and requirements, and assist with or prepare waste management plans and other environmental documentation required for site activities. In addition, you will monitor and report on site waste management activities to support compliance and performance improvement.

 

As part of the wider project team, you will support the preparation of Environmental Impact Assessments, either through direct input or by managing external consultants. You will also work closely with Engineering and Construction teams to ensure compliance with environmental conditions specified by local planning authorities and other legal and statutory agreements.

 

 

What you’ll bring

To be successful in this role, you will bring proven experience in Environmental Management, including a strong working knowledge of ISO 14001, Environmental auditing and engagement with Environmental regulators, ideally gained within a commercially focused Utility, Service or Construction business.

 

You will be educated to degree level in a relevant Environmental discipline and possess an in-depth understanding of current and emerging Environmental legislation. An Environmental auditing qualification and membership of a relevant professional body would be advantageous.

 

You will have strong influencing, consulting and communication skills, supported by excellent written and verbal communication abilities. Sound planning and analytical skills are essential, with the ability to anticipate potential challenges and develop effective solutions. Experience of collaborating with Contractors is also important.

 

As a minimum, you will hold a degree in an Environmental discipline and have experience working in an Environmental role within an Engineering or Construction-related environment. You will be computer literate, with a working knowledge of Microsoft packages, and possess a current valid driving licence.
