Job Description

Job Title: Data Centre Design & Simulation Engineer

Location: Manchester, UK

Company: Manchester Simulations Limited (Mansim)

Employment Type: Full-Time

Job Reference: MS-T-106

Position Overview

Mansim is looking for a Data Centre Design & Simulation Engineer to join our growing technical team.

The successful candidate will work on the design, modelling and optimisation of data centre facilities, primarily using Cadence Reality DC Design and Digital Twin, alongside other relevant engineering software.

The role will include internal data-hall airflow and cooling analysis, external airflow and heat-rejection modelling, HVAC and cooling-system assessments, and hydraulic network modelling. It will also cover capacity planning, energy-efficiency assessments and operational, resilience or equipment-failure scenarios.

Hydraulic modelling activities may include chilled-water, condenser-water and liquid-cooling networks, including pumps, valves, pipework, pressure losses, flow distribution and system balancing.

You will work alongside Mansim’s CFD engineers, mechanical engineers, technical consultants and software specialists, supporting data centre designers, operators, contractors and technology providers.

Previous experience with Cadence Reality is desirable but not essential. Experience with similar data centre modelling, CFD, hydraulic, thermal simulation or digital twin software is also valuable. Full training and ongoing technical support will be provided.

Key Responsibilities

·        Develop data centre design and digital twin models using Cadence Reality and other relevant engineering tools.

·        Model internal airflow, temperature distribution, pressure and cooling performance within data halls.

·        Assess hot-aisle and cold-aisle containment, airflow recirculation, bypass airflow and IT equipment inlet conditions.

·        Undertake external airflow and thermal modelling around data centre buildings and mechanical plant.

·        Model hydraulic networks for chilled-water, condenser-water and liquid-cooling systems.

·        Assess pumps, valves, pipework, pressure losses, flow distribution and hydraulic system balancing.

·        Evaluate cooling and heat-rejection equipment, including chillers, dry coolers, cooling towers, air-handling units, heat exchangers and liquid-cooling systems.

·        Analyse alternative equipment layouts, IT loads, cooling strategies, control arrangements and environmental conditions.

·        Undertake cooling-capacity, hydraulic-capacity, resilience, operational and equipment-failure assessments.

·        Review mechanical drawings, piping and instrumentation diagrams, equipment schedules, operating data and technical specifications.

·        Prepare technical reports, presentations and practical recommendations for clients.

·        Support software demonstrations, implementation projects, user training and technical workshops.

·        Maintain project records in accordance with Mansim’s Quality Management System.

Essential Qualifications and Experiences:

·        Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or a closely related subject.

·        Good understanding of HVAC, cooling systems, thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics.

·        Understanding of hydraulic systems, including fluid flow, pressure loss, pumps, valves and pipe networks.

·        Ability to interpret engineering drawings, schematics, piping and instrumentation diagrams and equipment schedules.

·        Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

·        Good written and verbal communication skills.

·        Ability to prepare clear technical reports and explain engineering findings to clients.

·        Willingness to learn Cadence Reality and develop specialist knowledge of data centre engineering.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

·        Experience in data centre mechanical design, operation, commissioning or consultancy.

·        Experience with Cadence Reality or comparable data centre modelling and digital twin software.

·        Experience using CFD, hydraulic network modelling, thermal modelling or building-services simulation software.

·        Experience with software such as Pipe Flow, AFT Fathom, Pipe-Flo, Flowmaster, HYSYS, IES, Revit, Navisworks or similar platforms.

·        Knowledge of chilled-water, condenser-water, air-cooled, evaporative, free-cooling or liquid-cooling systems.

·        Experience modelling internal data-hall airflow or external airflow around buildings and mechanical plant.

·        Experience undertaking pump sizing, pressure-drop calculations, flow-balancing studies or hydraulic capacity assessments.

·        Familiarity with data centre thermal guidelines, energy-efficiency requirements and resilience principles.

·        Experience working with CAD, BIM, BMS, DCIM or operational monitoring data.

·        Chartered Engineer status or progress towards professional registration.
