Borders General Hospital is a modern and well-equipped 320 bed DGH serving the rural Borders area in South East Scotland, approximately 36 miles from Edinburgh.

The Role

This friendly department provides predominantly elective outpatient and theatre-based Oral Surgery and tier 2 Oral Medicine services to the paediatric and adult population of the Scottish Borders in a well-equipped and well supported district general hospital. The hospital cares for 2% of the population of Scotland spread over 10% of the country, which presents challenges requiring a flexible and adaptable approach. This is helped by the presence of excellent GPs, GDPs and Public Dental Service across the region, with whom the applicant will be expected to build rapport over the coming years.

The post consists of a mix of outpatient consultation clinics, treatment sessions using local anaesthetic and intravenous sedation, and theatre sessions.

There is no out-of-hours commitment with this post, but the successful applicant will be expected to consult and manage emergency presentations during working hours, working with our Emergency Departments colleagues, including identification and onward referral of patients requiring OMFS in-patient management. Out-of-hours emergency cover is provided by the OMFS team based in NHS Lothian.

The hospital is located in a rural setting with excellent schools, abundant local amenities and good transport links to Edinburgh. Superb local leisure facilities plus good quality affordable housing, provide ideal opportunities for a high quality of life in this scenic part of the country. A relocation package up to full Inland Revenue limits is available for the successful candidate if relocating their main residence to the local area.

Candidates must be fully registered with the General Dental Council and on the Specialist List for Oral Surgery or within 6 months of entry at interview date.
