Job Summary

UHB Trust are seeking an outstanding Consultant Cardiac Surgeon to join one of the UK's leading cardiac surgery programmes at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. As a centre of excellence, UHB delivers a comprehensive adult cardiac surgery service including complex valve surgery, aortic surgery, transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, and advanced heart and lung failure services.

This post offers a unique opportunity for a surgeon with a specialist interest in mitral valve disease, including complex mitral valve repair and reconstruction, to help further develop our respected valve service. The successful candidate will provide elective and emergency cardiac surgical care, contribute to transplantation and mechanical support programmes, and participate in the consultant on-call rota.

We are looking for a highly motivated surgeon who is fully competent in cardiac surgery, demonstrates excellent clinical outcomes, and thrives within a multidisciplinary environment. Applicants must be GMC registered (or eligible), be on the Specialist Register in Cardiothoracic Surgery (or eligible within six months), and have a proven interest in mitral valve surgery. Mitral valve and transplant fellowship experience would be advantageous.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required

The successful applicant will provide consultant-level care for elective and emergency cardiac surgical patients within a high-volume tertiary cardiac surgery service. The role has a particular focus on the development and delivery of specialist mitral valve surgery, including complex mitral valve repair and reconstruction, alongside the management of a broad range of adult cardiac surgical conditions.

The post holder will participate in all aspects of the department's clinical activity, including outpatient clinics, operating lists, multidisciplinary team meetings, ward care and participation in the consultant on-call rota for cardiac surgical emergencies, cardiothoracic trauma and transplantation. They will also contribute to the Trust's nationally commissioned heart and lung transplantation and mechanical circulatory support programmes.

The consultant will work closely with cardiologists, intensivists, anaesthetists, nursing teams and allied health professionals to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care and support continuous service improvement. Responsibilities include maintaining high clinical standards, contributing to clinical governance, audit and quality improvement initiatives, responding to patient concerns in line with Trust policies, and ensuring accurate clinical documentation and information governance compliance.
