Job Summary

A new and exciting substantive vacancy has arisen within University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust for a part-time Band 6 Paediatric Dermatology Clinical Nurse Specialist.

The successful candidate will be required to work in collaboration with our Paediatric Dermatology Consultants, existing clinical nurse specialist, children's services staff, children, young people and their families. The role is for 17 hours per week and will deliver care and support to children and young people across Solihull and Heartlands Hospitals, seeing patients within outpatient and ward areas. This may at times also extend to Good Hope Hospital reviews.

Some children have a problem that affects more than just their skin. We work closely with other specialists in and out of the hospital setting such as paediatricians, rheumatologists, ophthalmologists, dietitians, other Clinical Nurse Specialists, GPs, physiotherapists and local mental health service providers to ensure we are always providing the best possible care.

We are looking for a highly motivated children's nurse who has experience with children and young people, training and educating parents/ carers and has an understanding of long term skin conditions.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate excellent skills in communication, organisation and time management and will be expected to participate in regular clinical supervision, Appraisal NMC Revalidation.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required

Our Dermatology service provides friendly, timely and high-quality care to children who have problems with their skin, hair or nails. Usually, we know what is wrong just by listening to the patient and examining the skin, but sometimes we need to do blood tests, urine tests, X-rays or special tests. An empathetic and problem-solving approach is essential.

We may advise medicines, creams, lotions or dressings and our nurse will be expected to demonstrate how to apply them, advise on general skin care, administer and teach parents/ carers to administer injection therapy and will also support the Consultant team with systemic clinics and Haemangioma monitoring.

Our specialist nurses support patients and families with the emotional aspects of their skin condition, helping them to understand it and empowering them to deal with it effectively. We provide a telephone and email support service for our patients and give advice to parents/ carers, schools, community nurses and GPs.

We welcome enquiries and informal visits to anyone interested in this role.

About University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) is one of the largest teaching hospital trusts in England, serving a regional, national and international population. It includes Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, Solihull Hospital and Community Services, Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield and Birmingham Chest Clinic. We also run a number of smaller satellite units, allowing people to be treated as close to home as possible. We see and treat more than 2.2 million people every year across our sites and our hospitals deliver more babies than anywhere else in Europe. We are a regional centre for cancer, trauma, renal dialysis, burns and plastics, HIV and AIDS, as well as respiratory conditions like cystic fibrosis. We also have expertise in premature baby care, bone marrow transplants and thoracic surgery and have the largest solid organ transplantation programme in Europe. We provide a series of highly specialist cardiac, liver and neurosurgery services to patients from across the UK. We are world-renowned for our trauma care and have developed pioneering surgical techniques in the management of ballistic and blast injuries, including bespoke surgical solutions for previously unseen injuries. As a result of its clinical expertise in treating trauma patients and military casualties, the QEHB has been designated both a Level 1 Trauma Centre and host of the UK’s only £20m National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Surgical Reconstruction and Microbiology Research Centre (SRMRC). We have over 24,000 members of staff and we are committed to investing in their development and their health and wellbeing. UHB is a Stonewall Diversity Champion and aims to achieve positive change for LGBTQ+ people by creating an inclusive, inspiring and equal environment for both staff and service users.
