Job Summary

We are currently recruiting for a Band 5 Staff Nurse to work on our complex multi-specialty surgical 36-bedded ward on Harborne Hospital Level 4 (part of CDG 9A).

This ward cares for patients who are one step down from critical care and EPOC who have had surgery for Colorectal, Upper GI, Sarcoma and Urology conditions.

Previous surgical ward experience in an acute secondary NHS care setting is essential for this role, and you must also demonstrate a passion for post-operative care and ERAS recovery.

We are looking for nurses with the skills to thrive within a fast-paced environment and the ability to cope under pressure.

We work closely with our surgical and specialist nursing teams to develop a multi-disciplinary approach which shapes and provides high class surgical care for our patients.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required

You will care for patients who have undergone complex or challenging surgery under one of our four specialities (colorectal / upper GI / urology / sarcoma). Many of your patients will have had a stay in ITU or EPOC after their surgery and may have a long recovery time on the ward - many of your patients will have life-altering outcomes from their surgery.

Responsible for between 6 and 9 patients, you will ensure accurate records are kept and appropriate action is taken to ensure good recovery and safe & timely discharge. You will act promptly and take effective action if any of your patients become critically unwell.

You will act as an advocate for your patients, ensuring a patient-focused approach to the delivery of care. You will need to communicate clearly and effectively with your patients, their relatives or carers, and other members of the MDT.

Student Nurses are regularly placed on the ward; you will help with their training and development whilst ensuring safe practice is always maintained. You will also undertake your own additional skills development and training.

Daily expectations include - effective handover, prompt escalation of deteriorating patients, compassionate care, clear communication, teamwork, attention to detail and excellent clinical practice.

Qualifications

Essential

• Evidence of professional and clinical knowledge acquired through training to degree/diploma level leading to Professional registration on the appropriate part of the NMC register i.e. ( Adult / Child / Learning Disability or Mental Health)
• Evidence of undergraduate education for newly qualified nurses / or post graduate continuing professional development for registered nurses who have post registration experience
  
  

Experience

Essential

• Previous / recent experience or working in an acute secondary health and care setting (can include undergraduate student placements within the last 12 months)
• Willingness to become a practice supervisor / assessor to or meets Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards for student supervision and assessment
• Demonstrable understanding and knowledge of the NMC code of conduct and the proficiencies and standards for registered nurses can apply this to undergraduate training or post graduate practice
• Being an accountable professional
• Promoting health and preventing ill health
• Assessing needs and planning care
• Providing and evaluating care
• Leading and managing nursing care and working in teams -- including prioritisation and delegation skills
• Coordinating care and responding to deteriorating health

• Good IT skills ability to record information electronically
• Competent in a range of clinical skills/ nursing procedures willingness to undertake expanded practices relevant to the scope of practice require
• Competent in managing the care of a group of patients / shift management (take charge of the practice setting in the absence of more senior staff) relevant to the practise setting.
