Job Purpose:          To support the national delivery of MDT services 

 

Duration:               6-month secondment opportunity

 

National MDT Lead

The multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting approach is the accepted standard for clinical decision making and treatment planning in cancer, and in recent years MDT review of proposed treatment plans have become more common in other specialties including orthopaedic and spinal surgery. 

The job purpose is to support the delivery of digital multi-disciplinary (e-MDT) services across the Spire group of hospitals, with a particular focus on MDTs for elective surgery. This will include co-ordinating planned MDT’s, ensuring relevant information is collated and available for review by MDT members.  The role will also require working with consultants to ensure the service is well structured, runs effectively and that patients are discussed and treated in line with available guidelines. 

 

 

Accountabilities

 

  1. Active member of Spire’s e-MDT team working to maintain and develop Spire MDTs in line with the implementation plan and specialty developments.
  2. Co-ordinate Spire e-MDT meetings to facilitate communication and the provision of planned care.
  3. Ensure that systems are in place to deliver a quality Spire MDT meetings, providing support and administrative service to Spire e-MDT meetings. 
  4. Communicate with clinicians and hospital staff to ensure timely feedback of outcomes and maintain effective MDT to surgical bookings times.
  5. Collect and use data to facilitate ongoing audit and MDT peer review to provide assurance that required standards are met and / or support service redesign where required.
  6. Develop own knowledge and practice in e-MDT service provision, contributing to policy development in this area and providing advice and support to Spire hospitals where required
  7. Provide and receive complex, sensitive or contentious information. 
  8. Monitor, maintain and promote own and others’ health and safety and security
  9. Promote equality, diversity and rights

 

Specific Responsibilities

 

1.    Work with Spire’s MDT working group to establish and maintain new Spire MDTs

  • Identify and discuss with colleagues any risks relating to Spire’s MDT development plan and effective management strategies to reduce the level of risk. 
  • Support Spire MDTs to discharge their responsibilities in line with policies and procedures. 
  1. Co-ordinate Spire MDT meetings
  • Coordinate the planning & organisation of Spire MDT meetings in relevant specialties. 
  • Ensure that patients are listed for discussion within the appropriate Spire MDT meeting.
  • Be responsible for the locking of MDT discussion and the escalation of cases for exception discussion. 
  • Ensure that all required information is made available to MDT members prior to any appointment or meeting. 
  • Ensure timely feedback to referring clinicians to confirm outcomes and enable surgery listings.
  • Follow policies which are developed by Spire and Spire MDTs and implement these in the role (e.g. designing new forms to monitor the data required & ensuring that it is collected).
  • Propose changes in working practices or procedures for own role within Spire MDTs, and comment on changes proposed by others in the team
  1. Ensure that systems are in place to deliver a quality supporting and administrative service to Spire MDT meetings. 
  • Support the implementation and maintenance of e-MDT meetings and outcomes.
  • Contribute to the design or development of new forms and data sets when requested by Spire MDTs or required by new guidelines or best practice.
  • Develop processes to help ensure information recorded on Spire’s e-MDT systems is accurate and up-to-date.
  • Provide training on the systems in place to new Spire e-MDTs / MDT members where required.
  • Respond to or escalate queries and IT issues raised by Spire e-MDTs / MDT members.
  • Regularly develop or create reports, documents etc. for use by Spire MDTs and Spire’s management teams where required.
  • Report incidents and complaints immediately, facilitating investigation and resolution.

     

  1. Collect and use data to facilitate ongoing audit and MDT peer review
  • Work closely with the wider clinical team to develop and implement MDT audits in relevant specialties.     
  • In conjunction with the team, help identify patients eligible for inclusion in audits and support any relevant research projects in this area.
  • Undertake audits of a range of MDT activities as guided by the team, collating and critically analysing audit data and developing reports to demonstrate compliance and to facilitate and support service redesign.
  • Work closely with MDT members to review what they do well and what they need to improve, identifying actions to achieve this.
  • Contribute to policy and practice changes arising from audits, complaints, requests or new research based evidence.
  • Work with others to identify the effectiveness of Spire MDT services against agreed criteria and national guidance.
  • Develop and implement processes to support peer review of Spire MDTs, including a review schedule and organising reviews as and when they become due.
  • Participate in the peer review process when required, alongside other members of the team.

  • Maintain personal development portfolio, applying own new learning to the future development of MDT services.
  • Use knowledge and learning to develop new or revised policies and processes for MDT services across Spire. 
  • Provide advice and support on approaches to MDT services, proactively and on request. 
  • Encourage others to make realistic self-assessment and application of knowledge and skills. 
  • Contribute to the development of a learning culture within Spire Healthcare.
  • Alert managers to resource issues which affect learning, development and performance. 

 

  1. Provide and receive complex, sensitive or contentious information. 
  • Handle highly sensitive and confidential information on a daily basis.  There may be a need to discuss information with patients and relatives as a part of the job role.
  • Communicate with a range of clinical and non-clinical team members and facilitate communication between different members of the team and between MDT services when required
  • Be the point of contact for Spire MDT service information requests and the collation and production of statistical and other types of information.
  • Prioritise all incoming messages and requests, investigating and dealing with as many as possible and bringing others to the attention of the appropriate person in a suitable timescale.
  • Ensure confidentiality of patient information in line with data protection legislation, best practice and Spire Healthcare policies. 
  • Communicate information only to those people who have a right and need to know it, consistent with Spire Healthcare procedures and the law.

Qualifications and Training

 

Essential

 

  • A good standard of education including minimum GCSE Grade C and above in English and Maths (or equivalent)

     

  • NVQ Level 3 qualification or equivalent experience 

 

Experience

 

Essential

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in relevant complex / changing environment (health sector preferable)
  • Experience of working in partnership with clinicians and participating in developing new processes to improve service delivery
  • Experience of managing highly confidential information in a professional and restricted manner
  • Experience of leading the delivery of change to practice and improvement

 

Desirable

  • Previous experience as an MDT Coordinator or knowledge of MDT working procedures and practices 
  • Experience of independent sector working.
  • Experience of working within digital platforms

 

 

Knowledge and Technical Ability

 

Essential

  • Familiar with the use of MS Office and other relevant IT packages.
  • Experience of preparing both verbal and written reports
  • Proven experience in the management of meetings, including preparation and forward planning, effective minute taking, recording of action points/logs and tracking actions

 

Desirable

  • Familiar with audit across clinical standards and departments
  • Evidence of involvement in projects and / or project planning
  • Evidence of updating in relevant health care developments
  • Excellent awareness of the terminology used within the health system
