Job Summary
The post is a one-year fixed term contract from August to August rotation. It will be based at the Great Western Hospital Swindon (GWH) This is an exciting and unique opportunity for a trainee with an interest in education. The post will be 50% in General Surgery and Post Graduate Medical Education 50%. The post will also include the opportunity to be involved in the exciting field of simulation.
This post would typically suit a resident doctor with a minimum of 2 years post graduate experience (ST1 - ST4 level doctor at start of appointment) such as those wishing to undertake further training in medical education as part of an Out of Programme Experience (OOPE) from their Specialist training programme. To assist the Director Medical Education and relevant clinical specialty in their educational strategy to design, develop, deliver & evaluate Postgraduate training programmes which encompass essential clinical skills, simulation training, quality improvement work and trainee support.

Main duties of the job
- Provision of clinical education for postgraduate clinical trainees including simulation and clinical skills for trainees
- To take part in on-going research projects or undertake original work under supervision with the aim of producing peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national and international meetings in relation to education.
- Bedside and classroom teaching of postgraduate trainees in varies specialties.
- Coordination of post graduate trainees' teaching opportunities
- Supporting Clinical Skills Teaching and ward-based assessment to post graduate trainees.
- Evaluation of teaching in conjunction with the relevant administrator.
- Undertaking any training that is identified as necessary for the candidate to teach effectively.
- Promote and deliver simulation as an effective educational tool.
- Support the return to training champion with any teaching for resident doctors returning after a period of leave.
- Contribute to the organising and delivery of departmental inductions for new resident doctors.
- Promote completion of NTS and NETS within the organisation and encourage resident doctors to complete.

Patient Care
- The successful post-holder will spend 50% within the Postgraduate Medical Education Team at GWH. The remaining sessions, 50% will be spent working clinical in the surgery department.
- The successful applicant will undertake the below duties, these are not definitive and may be changed in accordance with the needs of the service and the level of training attained by the candidate.
- Take a history and examine patients.
- Identify and synthesise problems.
- Prescribe safely.
- Keep accurate and relevant medical records.
- Complete discharge summaries in a timely fashion and be responsible for the prescribing of discharge medication.
- Manage time and clinical priorities effectively.
- Take part in relevant clinical procedures.
- Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues.
- Use evidenced based guidelines and audit to benefit of patient care.
- Clinical and PGME work will not be on-call
- Participation in either QI, Audit, management roles within the department.
- General Surgery department works in two teams, UGI and Colorectal. It is expected that successful candidate would be part of one of teams and take part in supervised clinics, theatres and ward rounds as a part of their training .

- oEligible to work at ST1-ST4 at the time of appointment
- Post graduate courses or qualifications in medical education
- oSubstantive NHS experience working in general surgery
- oExperience of teaching postgraduate medical resident doctors on training programmes
- oExperience of the ARCP process
- oExperience of engaging with quality assessment of postgraduate medical training programmes such as the GMC trainee survey and National Educational and Training Survey
- oExperience of Quality Improvement and / audit
- oExperience of using e-portfolios / appraisal systems for evidence collection
- oRepresenting the views and needs resident doctors
- oDemonstrable experience of leading a change or improvement
