Position

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Nurse Specialist within our Public Health Team based at Ailsa Hospital working on the TB Programme.

Hours

This post is 36 hours, Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm.

This post is offered on a fixed term or secondment basis until 31 March 2028

From 1 April 2026, the working week for NHS Agenda for Change staff in Scotland will be reduced. Full-time hours will reduce from 37 to 36 hours (pro rata for part-time staff) without loss of earnings.

What You Will Do

The postholder will provide specialist clinical leadership in the prevention, identification, and management of tuberculosis (TB) across NHS Ayrshire & Arran. Working as part of the Public Health Team, the Clinical Nurse Specialist will be responsible for the coordination and delivery of care for individuals with active TB, ensuring highquality case management, directly observed therapy (DOT) where required, and robust followup in line with national guidance.

The role will also support the screening, assessment, and management of individuals with latent TB infection (LTBI), working closely with Respiratory Services, Pharmacy, Health Protection, and primary care partners to promote timely treatment, reduce disease progression, and improve population health outcomes.

In addition, the postholder will contribute to the investigation and public health management of emerging infections, supporting incident response, contact tracing, risk assessment, and implementation of control measures. They will provide expert clinical advice, contribute to surveillance activity, develop care pathways, and support education for colleagues and partner agencies.

The postholder will play a key role in strengthening local TB and emerging infection pathways, ensuring a personcentred, culturally competent approach that reduces inequalities and supports the delivery of safe, effective, and evidencebased public health practice.

Tuberculosis Case Management

• Provide specialist clinical assessment, care planning and ongoing management for individuals with active TB, ensuring care is delivered in line with national guidance and local protocols.
• Coordinate Directly Observed Therapy (DOT) where required, ensuring adherence support, documentation, and timely escalation of concerns.
• Maintain accurate and comprehensive clinical records, ensuring data is entered into relevant surveillance and monitoring systems.
• Work collaboratively with Respiratory Services, Pharmacy, Health Protection, Third Sector and primary care colleagues to ensure an integrated, personcentred approach to TB care.
• Support complex case management, including individuals with social vulnerabilities, comorbidities or barriers to engagement, using traumainformed and culturally sensitive approaches.
  
  

Latent TB Infection (LTBI) Screening and Management

• Support the clinical delivery of LTBI screening programmes for eligible populations in line with national policy.
• Undertake clinical assessments and followup of individuals identified through screening pathways.
• Provide education, counselling and support to individuals undergoing LTBI treatment, ensuring safe prescribing pathways are followed in collaboration with Pharmacy and Respiratory colleagues.
• Monitor treatment completion and outcomes, ensuring timely escalation of any clinical or adherence concerns.
  
  

Investigation and Management of Emerging Infections

• Contribute to the public health response to emerging infections, including risk assessment, contact tracing, and implementation of infection control measures.
• Participate in incident and outbreak investigations, supporting the collection of information, communication with affected individuals, and delivery of control actions.
• Provide specialist clinical advice to colleagues, partner organisations and service users on emerging infection risks, pathways, and management.
  
  

Clinical Leadership, Education and Quality Improvement

• Provide training, guidance and informal advice to multidisciplinary teams and wider partners for TB and emerging infections.
• Support the development and review of clinical pathways, policies and guidelines to ensure evidencebased and consistent practice.
• Participate in audit, surveillance and quality improvement activities to enhance service delivery and population health outcomes.
• Contribute to strategic planning and service development within the Public Health Team where relevant to TB and emerging infection prevention and control.
