Job Description

The Role

We require an enthusiastic Orthoptist with an interest in working with children who have complex physical and/or sensory issues and their families/carers.

The Paediatric Orthoptic service covers the population of Glasgow and acts as a tertiary referral centre for the West of Scotland.

The department provides a service to children with a wide range of complex medical needs and works with families and carers as part of a multi-disciplinary team. You will work alongside other experienced Paediatric Orthoptists and as part of the Paediatric Ophthalmology team.

All roles will be assessed for sponsorship eligibility in line with current Home Office requirements. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) can only issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) where these are met.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

  • This is a fixed-term post until the end of March 2027
  • This post is part-time working 21.6 hours over 6 sessions from Monday to Friday, 8.45 am 16.45pm
  • You will be based at the Royal Hospital for Children, 1345 Govan Road, Glasgow G51 4TF
  • Please note the salary is Pro Rata for part time hours
  • Expected interview date Wednesday, 10 June am

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will act as an autonomous practitioner, investigating, diagnosing and treating all new and review patients referred to the orthoptic service, both as outpatients and inpatients.

Referrals are received from a wide range of sources including ophthalmology, maxillofacial, neurology, medical, paediatrics, community optometry and general practice.

You will liaise closely with the Head Orthoptist, ophthalmologists and other healthcare professionals, providing expert advice on the management of cases where appropriate.

You will organise and prioritise initial orthoptic appointments within orthoptic and ophthalmic clinics, and respond to enquiries arising throughout the working day, taking appropriate action and escalating or liaising with the Head Orthoptist regarding any issues as required.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

  • Current registration with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • A degree / diploma in Orthoptics
  • Previous post graduate clinical orthoptic experience in acute sector orthoptic service
  • Evidence of experiential learning to enable management of a complex caseload.
  • Evidence/documentation of continuing professional development (CPD)
  • High level of personal and professional motivation enabling post holder to work independently.
  • High level of communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team
