Requirements

Candidates must be a registered mental health nurse with at least 2 years of post-registration experience. An Occupational Health nursing qualification is desirable, along with advanced skills in mental health and substance use assessment.

Job Description

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.

The Role

The post holder will be an NMC level 1 registered mental health nurse (RMN, RNMH, RN3) with some relevant or significant post-registration experience at AFC Band 5 (or equivalent). An Occupational Health nursing qualification (or working towards this) is desirable.

This exciting role with NHS GG&C Occupational Health service will primarily involve the assessment and monitoring of the mental health of those referred to the service with an emphasis on how this impacts, or is impacted by, their job role or work within the organisation. The post holder will work as a key member of the existing Occupational Health service and their multidisciplinary team in their delivery of a comprehensive service at a time of growth and development. You will be expected to assess, support and monitor employees to achieve and sustain a level of mental health and wellbeing with the emphasis on maximising their potential in work and in life. Assessment of fitness for work will also be a key element of this role in addition to research and development relating to the links between mental health and wellbeing and work roles. You will also be instrumental in promoting a positive culture of general and mental health and wellbeing whilst identifying opportunities for health promotion, education, and training on issues relevant to positive mental health. Previous experience of detailed mental health assessment, comprehensive health and social assessment and also experience of alcohol and substance assessment and current evidence based best practice treatments and interventions is essential. You will have exemplary communication, assessment and organisational skills with a positive and enthusiastic approach to this developing aspect of the service. You will be able to work independently but also function effectively within the larger team, whilst demonstrating adaptability to the diverse and variable demands upon our service.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) may be able to provide visa sponsorship for certain roles, subject to the post meeting the relevant eligibility criteria. Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

  • Location based in 6th Floor, West Glasgow Ambulatory Care Hospital
  • Permanent Contract
  • Full-time position (36 hours per week)
  • Shift pattern for this post are Monday - Friday within 08:00-18:00

Key Responsibilities

  • Practice within the legal and ethical framework as established by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and Health and Safety legislation to ensure employee interests and wellbeing are met.
  • The Mental Health Nurse (Occupational Health) will adhere to the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council to maintain their professional registration.
  • Assessing the fitness to work of prospective employees by scrutinising Health Declaration forms for new employees identifying previous and current health issues, informing Managers/Human Resources of outcomes.
  • Assessing the fitness to work of prospective employees by interviewing clients directly in relation to health issues identified in their Health Declaration form, informing Managers/Human Resources of outcomes.
  • Assisting in the implementation of the Department of Health (DOH) guidelines relating to Exposure Prone Procedure work. This involves the assessment of fitness to practice in accordance with these guidelines by the collection of information and investigation.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

  • 1st level registered mental health nurse
  • Occupational Health Nursing Certificate/ Diploma/Degree, working towards this or willing to undertake this qualification when in post.
  • Minimum of 2 years post registration experience
  • Ability to demonstrate competence of own duties outlined in job description.
  • Able to demonstrate adaptability and flexibility in clinical practice.
  • Advanced skills in mental health assessment.
  • Advanced skills in substance use assessment.
